Shaw Lumber Company celebrates 95 years of service to Sumter and the surrounding communities, marking nearly a century of growth since its founding on July 1, 1930. Paul Whitworth "Whit" Shaw established the company during the Great Depression with financial help from his aunt and brother Charles. Born in Alcolu, SC, Whit came from a family deeply rooted in the lumber business. After attending Davidson College, Whit returned home to work in the family business before starting his own company.

The company has remained family-owned through three generations, with leadership passing from Whit to his son Charles Lemmon Shaw (after his WWII service), and then to Paul Whitworth Shaw II in 1975. Whit's brother, LT Ervin D. Shaw, was a pilot killed in action during World War I. He is the namesake of Shaw Air Force Base, just west of Sumter.Today, Shaw Lumber Company stands as Sumter's largest full-service building supplier, maintaining its 95-year reputation through personal service and competitive pricing as a member of LMC's multi-billion dollar buying group.
