LMC Dealers Learn at Nation’s Best Executive Education Program

The room was abuzz with inspiration and ideas as over 40 dealers from 22 states came together for their final day at the LMC Executive Education Program. The program was held in Philadelphia, PA January 14 – 19, 2018 at the renowned Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

“The partnership with Wharton and the ability to offer this kind of program, not seen elsewhere in the industry, is part of the reason LMC dealers stand out,” said LMC president John Somerville. “Since its inception in 2015, there has been high demand to be in attendance for this unique executive education experience.”

Recently, US News and The Financial Times named Wharton the best executive education program in the country, a feeling which was shared by the participants.

“All the professors, everybody was wonderful,” said Mike Heim, Inside Sales Manager of Tague Lumber in Media, PA. “[The program] gave us an opportunity to step outside our companies and hear other people’s points of view. You absolutely need to do it.”

The exclusive event has been described as a ‘first class experience,’ a rare opportunity to learn and grow under the guidance of Wharton professors—renowned in the field of business.  For participants in this years’ program, a new case study was offered around the topic of driving growth.

“The program has been eye opening,” explained Leanne Hallam, Office Manager of Killingly Building Products in Providence, RI. “It has really enveloped a lot of skills in just a few short days.”

This year, an entirely new curriculum was offered at the program, which led to two previous attendees coming back to learn more. Cory Jameson, CEO of Guy C Lee in Smithfield, NC, was one of the attendees who came back to attend the Wharton program offered by LMC for a second time.

“It’s a whole other experience being here for a second time,” Jameson said. “It reinforces what you learned the first time and it really makes you appreciate the people that are in this room.” He added that if a company has invested in an attendee by sending them to the LMC Wharton program it is very powerful for their future.

Hancock Lumber Welcomes Mainely Trusses to the Team!

Hancock Lumber is proud to announce their acquisition of Mainely Trusses, a market-leading roof and floor truss manufacturing facility based in Fairfield, Maine. Two successful Maine businesses are joining forces with this acquisition, giving Hancock Lumber a competitive advantage with this product line in the marketplace.

Mainely Trusses is a great fit for Hancock Lumber and the acquisition emphasizes their commitment to making wood framed construction simpler and faster for builders in Maine and New Hampshire. The addition of Mainely Trusses to Team Hancock makes them the first retailer in Maine to own and operate their own roof and floor truss manufacturing facility, with the ability to provide a complete set of wood framing solutions to their customers.

Manufacturing is not new to Hancock Lumber; in fact, the company's roots began in 1848 with milling logs into lumber and continues today with their three Eastern White Pine sawmills and wall panel manufacturing facility. Adding roof and floor truss manufacturing to the portfolio complements their offerings, bringing another product line direct from the manufacturer to builders.

Hancock Lumber looks forward to continuing Mainely Trusses' tradition of excellence and reputation for quality and service.

"Mainely Trusses has an excellent reputation in the construction industry across Maine. The company also has a set of core values that we like, admire and feel is aligned with Hancock's. People matter at Mainely Trusses and the company has high standards in terms of employee engagement and customer service.  We felt there was a lot we could learn from the company and some value we could add. When the opportunity to acquire Mainely Trusses materialized we recognized quickly that it would be a good long-term move that strengthened both companies." – Kevin Hancock, CEO

"The people, products and reputation of Mainely Trusses have always been very important to me. When the opportunity to join the Hancock team presented itself, it quickly became evident that the two companies shared the same values.  Transitioning ownership to a company that could help continue to improve Mainely Trusses for its employees and customers is the top priority for me. I could not be more confident on Mainely Trusses' future under Team Hancock's leadership and look forward to continuing to manage the business operations!" – Mike Boulet, Mainely Trusses General Manager

"I am very excited to have the Mainely Trusses team join Team Hancock to better serve our builders with the direct supply of roof and floor trusses for all wood framed projects. This is a great investment to continue to grow our in-house manufacturing, along with our wall panel division and eastern white pine sawmills." – Mark Hopkins, Hancock Retail COO

  • Hancock Lumber is expanding their manufacturing capabilities to supply roof and floor trusses, along with wall panels, direct to its builder customers.
  • Hancock Lumber will be eliminating two-step distribution of roof and floor truss manufacturing, streamlining the process for builders.
  • Builders will have direct communication and access to their truss manufacturer.
Please contact Mark Hopkins, Retail COO, with any questions: or 207-329-5448

It is estimated that between 70,000 and 90,000 people were in attendance at this years’ event.

There were many trends and innovations displayed at the show, but according to HBSDealer the top 3 were really the 3 S’s: Smart, Speed, Style.

Hundreds Gather in Philadelphia for Annual Expo

Wayne, PA – LMC hosted its annual Forest Products & Building Materials Expo from October 24 through the 26th at the Marriott in Center City Philadelphia.
LMC Board of Directors Chairwoman Kyra Bishop enjoys getting to interact with people in person rather than just over the phone or email—and the Expo gives LMC members the opportunity to do that.
“The most important part of this event is the face-to-face meetings and the relationships built by hearing the stories of the LMC staff, our vendors, and the individual dealers,” Bishop explained. It affords LMC dealers the chance to get some time with various vendors as well as get in some networking with others in the industry.
“I would [come] just for the networking,” said Joe Biewer of Kruse Lumber in MN. “You can talk to the vendors one-on-one.”
The event kicked off on Tuesday, October 24, with several executive meetings, including the meeting of the Board of Directors. Wednesday opened up with a forum on the 2018 outlook for the forest products industry. Three speakers—Jim Abbott of LP Building Products, Christian Gilbert of JD Irving Limited, and Wendy Minichiello of Weyerhaeuser—all discussed the upcoming year and gave their insights on what can be expected.
“Be bold,” advised Minichiello as she gave her predictions for 2018. She explained that the lumber market will be influenced by a number of factors next year, namely a high demand coupled with supply volatility due to the amount of Canadian lumber that will be available in the US market.
One hot topic at the forum was the issue of Millennials and when, or if, they will enter the housing market.
“Look at Millennials and history,” Dr. William Dunkelberg said. “They are still five or more years away from their peak home owner time.” The general consensus throughout the event was that we cannot rely on the actions of generations past when it comes to predicting how and when Millennials will enter the market.
Following the industry forum, LMC Dealers entered the expo floor where they had the opportunity to meet with LMC traders and 100 different vendors.
“We’ve got a great gathering of some of the largest manufacturers and distributors of forest products and building materials in North America,” said Andy Toombs, Senior Vice President of Purchasing at LMC. “We get a lot of things accomplished here and it’s been a great atmosphere.”
More than 200 attendees and 100 suppliers energized the room. Events like the Forest Products & Building Materials Expo are proof of the power of the LMC Dealer network when provided a direct line for the best possible deals from the top brands in the industry.
About LMC: LMC (Lumbermens Merchandising Corporation) is the leading Forest Products and Building Materials Buying Group in the USA owned by independent lumber and building material dealers.  There are over 1,350 LMC dealer locations in the United States and the Bahamas. Forecast Shared at the ProDealer Industry Summit

Last week NAHB’s chief economist, Robert Dietz, shared his thoughts on the housing market and what may be in store in the coming months for the industry. While the message was overall a positive one, the coming months won’t be without some struggles.

The Good

  • Forecasts show around a 7 percent growth in single family housing in early 2018.
  • There is a job growth of about 2 million every six months—with jobs 6 percent higher than they were prior to the recession.
  • Remodeling growth is expected to be around 17 percent for all of 2017, and another 4 percent growth is anticipated for 2018.
  • GDP should grow 2.3 percent in 2018, with a continued growth expected in 2019.

Potential Hurdles

  • The labor force in the industry is on a decline, mainly due to aging work forces, a lack of new workers coming into the field, and national issues such as the opioid crisis.
  • A lack of inventory in the housing market is causing prices to rise faster than income.
  • Mortgage rates are expected to increase around 5 percent next year. This may deter millennials from entering the housing market.
  • High student loan debt continues to prevent millennials from buying homes.

Read more of the forecast here.

Thinking Outside the Box at the 2017 LMC Leadership Summit!

On September 19th through the 22nd, LMC held its third annual Leadership Summit in Houston, Texas. This event brings together future leadership in the LMC Dealer network for three busy days of education, networking and team building experiences.
New this year was a “crossover day” with the simultaneously-occurring LMC Dealer Exchange attendees, facilitated by Columbia University adjunct associate professor Bruce Craven. For one day both groups worked together, to exchange ideas, and gain valuable insight from each other.
As part of the crossover day, both groups of attendees merged for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see behind the scenes of NASA’s Houston operations, including historic facilities, astronaut training areas and mission control for the International Space Station. This was followed by a special presentation from former NASA astronaut Jose M. Hernandez.

On day two, following a networking breakfast, aspiring leaders enjoyed a business improvisation workshop with Bob Kulhan, the CEO of Business Improv. Here, they were able to hone their communication and problem solving skills through a unique set of challenging scenarios. That evening, attendees were treated to an on-field experience before the Houston Astros game.  As a bonus, Reid Ryan, President of the Astros, gave an intimate presentation to the group in the Lexus Field Club at Minute Maid Park.
On the final day of the event, Woodson Lumber CEO Ann Yager Chapman shared her valuable and unique perspective on the steps involved in passing a family business to the next generation. Afterwards, Intel’s Rachel Mushahwar gave an energizing presentation about the rapid advancement of technology from an industry leader’s point of view and how it will change the world of business in the future. To end the summit, Bruce Craven tied the week’s learning experiences together in a closing session.
Kylie Holland from Curtis Lumber in Balston Spa, NY stated, “I thought this year’s Summit was well rounded and had a little something for everyone. I really enjoyed all of the speakers, and as always, catching up with my fellow LMC Aspiring Leaders. I look forward to this event every year!”
To support those effected by the hurricane attendees from both events donated several thousand dollars to Katy ISD Education Foundation that supports the local Houston School Districts.
Sponsors for this year’s event included Culpeper Wood Preservers, James Hardie, Interfor, West Fraser, Huber Engineered Woods and Boise Cascade.
LMC understands that taking on the family business can be an intimidating prospect, but through events like the Leadership Summit, we take great pride in doing everything we can to ease the transition and ensure the growth of the industry for years to come.

Full Speed Ahead at the 2017 LMC Dealer Exchange

On September 19th and 20th, LMC hosted its annual Dealer Exchange in Houston, Texas. The event brings together LMC Dealers from around the country for roundtable discussions and the sharing of best practices

Topics focused primarily on overcoming challenges facing LBM dealers in the digital age.  They included adapting to changing customer expectations, the need for personalized customer experiences to drive retention, and using technology for better reporting in yard management.

New to the Dealer Exchange this year was a crossover day with the LMC Leadership Summit attendees.   This Summit brings together the next-generation of leaders in the LMC Dealer network to prepare them for the road ahead in their family businesses. Thanks to the crossover day, Summit attendees were able to gain valuable insight from the today’s leaders in the LMC network and similarly, today’s leaders gained a unique perspective from the next generation.

This year’s Dealer Exchange also included tours of The Detering Co. and NASA. The Detering Tour offered attendees insight into the production and management strategies of one of the leading millwork companies in the industry.  The NASA Tour provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see behind the scenes of NASA’s Houston operations, including historic facilities, astronaut training areas and mission control for the International Space Station. This was followed by a special presentation from former NASA astronaut Jose M. Hernandez.

Glen Akins from Harper Chambers Lumber Company in Tuscaloosa, AL said, “This was my first Dealer Exchange and I thought it was great! Being able to sit and listen to other owners and managers "open up" about their business and concerns was refreshing to say the least. We all struggle with different things within our business's and to have such a great group of people together in one location speaks volumes of what LMC is trying to accomplish in securing the future of our dealers. Not only did I connect with other owners and managers; I was able to talk with the Aspiring Leaders about some of the obstacles they will face in their future endeavors.”

To support those affected by the hurricane, attendees from both events donated several thousand dollars to Katy ISD Education Foundation that supports the local Houston School Districts.

Sponsors for this year’s event included ModernView Windows & Doors by Atrium and USG.

It was a busy couple of days for all involved, but attendees left with not only new ideas and best practices to bring back home, but new relationships with fellow dealers that could last a lifetime.

Four Hours of Excitement in Boston at the Hardware Express!

LMC hosted its sixth annual Hardware Express at the Westin Boston Waterfront in Boston, MA. LMC purchasing manager Mike Connolly states,

“This event gives LMC dealers the chance to finish off the year strong thanks to exclusive networking opportunities and at-show-only deals with a wide range of LMC suppliers.”

As Mike Connolly alludes to, part of what defines the Hardware Express is its fleeting nature. That single day, particularly the four hours in which the actual sales take place, is fully packed with opportunities for the LMC dealer. Vendors offer exclusive on the show floor deals, and door prizes as well as the chance to discuss business growth opportunities.

When the dust settled on the show floor, dealers, suppliers and LMC staff alike were treated to a networking reception overlooking the beautiful Boston Waterfront. This represented an important opportunity for dealers to network and build new relationships.

Over 240 attendees and energized the room. Events like the Hardware Express are proof of the power of the LMC Dealer network when provided a direct line for the best possible deals from the top brands in the industry.

Seiffert Building Supplies Celebrates their 125th Anniversary

Seiffert Building Supplies, an LMC member since 1995, is celebrating quite a milestone this year: 125 years in business! The company was established in Davenport, Iowa in 1892 and has remained a family-owned business since then, now managed by the Burress family. Pictured is LMC Western Regional Manager Warren Schuckies (left) presenting a congratulatory plaque to company president Bill Burress (right) and his son Nathan Burress (center).

Seiffert’s commitment to the Iowa/Illinois “Quad-City” community they serve continues to grow, not just by being one of the leading lumber and hardware dealers in that area, but through their various charitable endeavors: Habitat for Humanity, United Way, various arts funds and outreach efforts for local homeless veterans, to name just a few.  Seiffert Building Supplies’ longevity is no doubt due to their strong commitment to both their professional builders and remodelers but also to the community they serve.

Congratulations to the staff and leadership of H.O. Sieffert!
LMC looks forward to many more years of building business together.

Guerry Lumber is Celebrating 90 Years in Business

Guerry Lumber of Savannah, GA turns 90 this year.  T.H. Guerry started the family business in 1927. He was a survivor of the Great Depression and saw a need for a lumber business in his community.  He would buy rough, green lumber and manufacture it for siding, windows and doors.

In 1934, at the age of 20, his son T.H. (Tom) Guerry Jr became his business partner.  Today, Tom’s daughter, Lynda Guerry Beam, is owner and chairs the board. Her daughter Lindy Beam Wheat is the fourth generation to join the company and serves as vice president.

In an article by Business in Savannah, Lindy Beam Wheat says the goal for the future is “To keep growing with the times, changing with the times. We’ve changed our product mix to keep up with the changing products in the industry and technological advances that will allow our customers to keep Guerry Lumber as their No. 1 supplier.”  Company President Steve Chick sums up their direction saying, “Our focus is customer service and quality products.”

LMC Dealers Tour 2nd Largest Plywood Producer in North America

LMC Dealers from North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia recently toured the Boise Cascade plant in Chester, SC.  Boise Cascade is the second largest plywood producer in North America.

LMC worked with Boise to bring a group of dealers together to take a first-hand look at the quality products their Chester mill is now producing.

Boise built the plant in Chester in the 80s.  The mill was then sold and had a number of owners who were known for inconsistent quality.  Boise changed all that when it bought the plant back in 2013 and invested significantly to bring up the quality.  They want to spread the news of the improved plant and the opportunities for LMC Dealers.

Advantages for LMC Dealers.

  • The Chester, SC plant is centrally located to serve plywood to dealers throughout the Southeast, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and North Central regions of the US.
  • Panels manufactured at Chester, SC now carry APA’s quality trademark and grade stamp. Boise Cascade has enhanced quality processes, reduced core gaps and improved glue formulas and improved safety, in their efforts to produce a better plywood panel.
Mill improvement and the APA certification process also created a safer work environment for employees, Boise Cascade’s most important core value.

“We want our employees to work in a safe, clean place and we want to produce a quality product; they go hand in hand,” said Herman LeBleu, Chester Plywood Plant Manager. “The safety improvements we made just happened to aid our quality efforts as well.”
LMC Dealers enjoyed the tour and the opportunity to network with
fellow dealers during the luncheon and dinner provided by Boise.

LMC Dealers put on hard hats and start the tour.   Discussing quality features of Boise's Panels.

The LMC 2017 "Billion Dollar Buying Power" Ad Campaign

LMC is proud to announce the release the 2017 "Billion Dollar Buying Power" Ad Campaign.  For the past four years, the LMC National Ad Campaign has worked to promote LMC Dealers across the country.  In January, the LMC Board of Directors approved a modest budget that allows us to continue this effort for 2017.
This campaign speaks to the strengths of our LMC independent lumber dealers.  It builds on the strategy of the past four years; driving home the value of doing business with an LMC Independent Dealer over a National Chain.
Targeting both the custom homebuilder and the remodeler, the campaign will be using digital media to create over 2,075,741 impressions from May through December.
Each digital ad steers the audience to a dedicated landing page that includes a short video of a builder customer talking about why he values LMC Dealers above the rest. It also includes a “call to action” to find their local LMC Dealer using the Dealer Locator.
Check out the Billion Dollar Buying Power videos:

Whites Lumber Celebrating 125 Years

LMC Honors Whites Lumber on their 125th Anniversary.
L to R: Ted White, Brad White & LMC Regional Manager, David Caisse.

George W. White entered the business world with two partners in 1892. This is the same year that Coco Cola was founded in Atlanta and The General Electric Company was established.

Originally, the company was set up as a hay press business.  Changes happened along the way and more product lines were added to meet customer needs.  Eventually, there were also name changes as the partners left the business, selling their shares to G.W.  By 1913, he was sole proprietor.

Since that time, company ownership has followed down the family line.  When G.W. retired, his son Roger W. became president of the company.  It was during his tenure, on April 5, 1961, White’s Lumber joined LMC.

In the late 1990’s when Roger W. retired, his four children – Bradford, Roger Jr (Ted), Sarah and Jonathan – took over the day-to-day management and operation of the company.  Today White’s Lumber has four locations serving the needs of their customers in Watertown, Gouverneur, Pulaski, and Clayton, New York.

LMC is proud to honor White's Lumber
on their milestone 125th Anniversary!

LMC Executive Program Making the Best Better

LMC Wharton partnership provides world-class executive development to members

More than 50 LMC dealers attended the third LMC Advancing Business Acumen course held in Philadelphia January 15 – 20, 2017.  The week-long program at the renowned Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania is in high demand since its original development for LMC’s Aspiring Leaders group. This year’s attendees included managerial staff of all ages and positions from LMC Dealers across the country.

John Somerville, LMC president, said: “The program with Wharton provides a valuable experience and is another example of how LMC dealers set themselves apart.  This high-level executive education is tailored to the building materials industry, and creates an environment where we are encouraged to think differently to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.”

The exclusive event is often described as a ‘firehose of information’ with Wharton professors covering everything from financial accounting to strategic management.  Attendees are confronted with a real life case study that analyzes a lumberyard from a high-level perspective and then challenges the participants to work together in groups and make strategic decisions.

“This course is all about "stretch-thinking", process driven problem solving, and recognizing that our most valuable resource is within collaboration, communication, and leadership.  Wharton's distinguished history combined with LMC's commitment to dealers is addressing the future head-on,” said attendee Larry Huot of Lavalley Building Supply in New Hampshire.  Seth Donohue, of Consolidated Lumber Company in Minnesota agreed saying, “It was a first-class experience. The professors are high energy and phenomenal.  The content and networking with fellow LMC Dealers is so relative to what we do that the entire course gives you a lot to take back and implement.”

Dealers applied knowledge gained throughout the week to their case study example and presented it to fellow attendees during the final class day.

Here are some scenes from the LMC Advancing Business Acumen course at Wharton.

Joe Burlison, LMC’s South Central Regional Manager, knows a thing or two about the Big Easy.  Joe is a major music aficionado playing in his own band.  He's also a seasoned visitor to some of the best venues and unique sounds New Orleans has to offer.  Listed below are his picks for a great NOLA experience.

Joe Burlison’s short list of recommendations…

Joe Burlison, LMC Regional Manager. Photo taken by Kevin Clark, CFO of Trussway, LMC Dealer in Houston, TX.1. Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Wed Nights at Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro.  This is not for dinner, just drinks and the best Jazz experience you will have in New Orleans.  15-20-piece brass orchestra playing jazz standards in an intimate theater directed by New Orleans royalty.
2. Jeremy Davenport Lounge at the Ritz Carlton.  Jeremy Davenport is a world-class trumpeter leading a small 5-piece ensemble nightly at the Davenport Lounge inside the Ritz.  Small dance floor, overpriced cocktails, no cover and terrific “Rat Pack’ era jazz.  Lots of swing, lots of cool.

The Davenport Lounge at the Ritz.
3. Carriage rides through the French Quarter.  They are lined up in front of Jackson Square, take the long (not short) tour through the Quarter.  It is the best way to get an overview, and the guides are informative and friendly.  Remarkable architecture awaits.
4. Frenchman’s Street at the back of the French Quarter.  In the 80’s, you could stand in the middle of Bourbon Street and hear jazz from every corner.  Not so much now.  Much of the Live Jazz scene has migrated to the back of the Quarter on Frenchman’s Street.  Lots and lots of live jazz.  Start at Snug Harbor.
5. Bad restaurants are illegal in New Orleans.  More than likely, if you have never heard of it, it is still a great restaurant.  The less touristy the better, but any of the historic better-known standards will be great.  I like Adolpho’s for Italian (beware cash only).  Save room for dessert!!!!

Looking for more great places to eat while in town?

The Diecidue family of Dash Lumber, our LMC Dealer in New Orleans, has their
family favorites and  provides these great recommendations (PDF).

LMC is making it easy to cross the Big Easy off your bucket list and add some great memories!

Buzz Bodes Well at the LMC EXPO

This year’s LMC Forest Products and Building Materials EXPO in Philadelphia was abuzz with anticipation for what’s next in the housing market.

For LMC stockholders and buyers, the annual event is a crucial opportunity to connect with other industry professionals. “The LMC EXPO is informative,” said Michael Coppage, of Kelly Brothers Home Center. “You network with fellow dealers and you speak to people who actually produce the materials. For us, it’s necessary information on how to handle our upcoming material needs.” This sentiment was echoed by increased turnout, with a ten percent boost in both supplier table top exhibits and dealer attendance.

One topic dominating conversations up and down the supply chain: the challenges posed to our industry by shortages in skilled labor. Unlike past issues relating to supply allocations or lending, the need for skilled labor is one that can be addressed by internal solutions, including the implementation of training and technology focused programs.

Featured speaker Clark Ellis, of the Continuum Advisory Group, dissected the topic from a builder perspective at a packed breakfast presentation. Ellis offered targeted strategies LMC dealers can use to provide necessary educational opportunities that set builders up for success.

LMC Senior Vice President Andy Toombs said, Positioning themselves for the upcoming year in this collaborative environment gives our dealers the competitive edge.”

The LMC EXPO remains a forum for sharing valuable insights and strengthening the relationships that foster forward-thinking, mutually-beneficial innovation.

The Detering Company Celebrates 90 Years

In the 1890's Carl Detering Jr.’s grandfather Herman ran the ‘Last Chance Grocery’ located at the end of a trolley line on Washington Avenue in Houston, TX.   On the same spot in 1926 Carl Sr. opened a building materials operation.  In its earliest days, The Detering Company was a brick company that very literally helped to build the city.  After World War II, The Detering Company was selling all kinds of essential construction supplies to builders, contributing heavily to one of Houston’s greatest construction eras.

In 1986, Carl Sr. passed the baton to his son, Carl Detering, Jr., who took over the role of president of the company.

The company has seen remarkable growth.  In 2011 they joined LMC.  In 2012 they realized that a new facility was needed to reach future goals.  The new facility was a big jump in size and bigger jump in efficiency.  So much so that in 2015 they received the ProSales Excellence Award in Facility Design.

Joe Burlison, LMC Regional Manager for the South Central Region (L in photo), recently stopped in to visit and presented General Manager, Alicia Dedman and Carl Detering, Jr (R in photo) with a plaque from LMC recognizing their milestone 90th Anniversary.

LMC Develops Leadership Training That Absolutely Crushes It

Wayne, PA ‐ LMC raised the bar on training for the up and coming generation at their latest Leadership Summit held in Baltimore on October 11-14.  Going outside the industry, LMC took attendees to where leadership skills are notably developed for excellence – the United States Naval Academy.  This was nothing like the classroom conferences that attendees are so often accustomed to. The LMC Leadership Summit kept attendees on the move in settings they won’t soon forget. Following the instructive words of the senior midshipmen in Memorial Hall at the US Naval Academy, attendees were also in the Baltimore Ravens Locker Room for a presentation on team building. LBM industry leader Huber spoke on how to effectively manage and lead strategic and organizational change.  A high energy session covering “Onboarding Teammates” came from the entrepreneurial and highly successful company Under Armour.
“What really differentiated this event from others is that we had the opportunity to meet and learn from leaders in other industries.” - Tim Huff, Building Center of Gloucester, MA and Chairman of LMC Aspiring Leaders Committee.
The theme of the summit ‘Leadership & Team Building’ also brought attendees to embark on a very physical and hands-on training for how to row on the Patapsco River. Rowing in sync is a must to be successful as a team in this sport. The group spent just as much time in team building exercises on land as they did with oars in hand on the river.  The analogy of rowing to illustrate the importance of teamwork was very insightful.  Out on the water the group was rewarded for their efforts with a surprise flyover by the Blue Angels!
“When we found our rhythm as a team it was great to be working at that higher level. The whole experience was really inspiring.”  - Ida Ross Hicks of Swift Supply, AL.
Strengthening leadership skills and relationships within the LMC network is key to this event.  It enables emerging leaders to share with other young leaders from across the country and seek out peers to build their own circle of influence within the LMC community.  LMC plans to continue these types of innovative events that echo the company’s philosophy of building business together.

When it comes to business challenges, LMC Dealers look forward to sharing their personal insights and real world solutions. That’s what dealers did during the annual LMC Dealer Exchange which was held September 26th through the 28th in Nashville, TN.

Even though the roundtables are a great forum for discussion, enough can’t be said about the one on one conversations going on during the breaks, meals, and local travel time. That’s when the real networking and new relationships are being forged. The relaxed atmosphere with some of the best minds in the industry provides the most thought provoking ideas for success.

“The LMC Dealer Exchange has just been exceptional for me and my son. We connected with other family members who own lumber businesses. It’s been great to exchange best practices and ideas with people who have similar challenges ‐ it’s been a remarkable experience.” ‐ Lanny Moore, Suncoast Contractor Supply

Facilitators spearheaded conversation on topics that covered onboarding and recruiting employees, social media, installed sales opportunities, and a lightening round of best practices. Masonite and ModernView Decking sponsored the event, presenting the benefits their products offer the professional customers.

Looking outside the industry, this year’s event included a tour of the Nissan Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, TN that produces over 640,000 vehicles annually. This tour was packed with massive robotic machinery, and layers of conveyors filling over 884 acres under one roof. The tour also offered key insights into supply chain, operational and logistical best practices.

LMC Dealers walked away with new connections and ideas to take back home. The LMC Dealer Exchange is an event where the sharing doesn’t end when the meeting is over.

That’s the kind of collaboration that is the
strength of the LMC network.

Speaker to urge involvement at annual women’s business event By Chris Bosak

Margaret Price, CEO of Ridgefield Supply Company in Ridgefield, Conn.Margaret Price, owner of Ridgefield Lumber is serving on the "Women with Impact" panel at the upcoming WBDC's 15th Annual Business Breakfast & Symposium in CT.  She was recently featured in CT Post about her participation and her efforts to encourage others to get involved.

From the article...

“Don’t be afraid to get involved with business organizations. You think you know it all but then you step outside and you realize there are so many people out there who can help you,” said Price, owner of Ridgefield Supply Co. “Every business is different, whether you’re an HR firm, a restaurant owner, a bakery owner or you sell children’s clothes, but we all face a lot of the same issues. It’s very easy to get stuck on an island and feel you can’t reach out to anybody. We all start off with right intentions. But it’s really, truly making the time to do it and committing to it.”

“The lumber and building material industry has a phenomenal foundation. We are part of a $3 billion buying group that allows us to be competitive with the big box stores,” Price said. “That goes hand-in-hand with the WBDC because being part of an organization, whether it’s a buying group or an organization like the WBDC, you have power in numbers and power in networking. For us, being part of the various groups we belong to is very important.”

Himes Hears Concerns of Lumber Industry By Chris Bosak, NewsTimes

U.S. Representative Jim Hines, Connecticut 4th Congressional district,
tours Ridgefield Supply Company with head of marketing
Craig Sinclair, in connection with the Lumber Dealers Association of Connecticut's annual yard tour week.
Friday, August 12, 2016, in Ridgefield, Conn.

RIDGEFIELD — Congressman Jim Himes got a sneak peak at what will be the new Ridgefield Supply Co. during a visit to the lumberyard on Friday afternoon.

Himes, D-4, met with personnel from the company to tour construction of the new site and to discuss the Lumber Dealers Association of Connecticut and legislation that impacts the lumber industry.

“It’s a great small business and growing. They just added three more hires,” the four-term Democrat said. “The Lumber Dealers Association of Connecticut is a good organization for highlighting issues that are important for them.”

Ridgefield Supply Co., which employs about 50 people, is currently building a new site adjacent to the existing one. Its current home will be leveled and another building will go there, as well as additional parking.

“Logistically it’s a big improvement for us,” Craig Sinclair, of Ridgefield Supply Co., said. “What’s interesting about this investment is that it’s happening a lot in this industry. It’s costing a lot but that’s all part of the process.”

Dealer Spotlight: Dash Lumber, New Orleans, LA

                     Gary, Joe, and Michael Diecidue

The Beginning….

The story of Dash Lumber starts with Joe Diecidue (Dásh-ê-dü) and his Dad Sam.  In 1946, the year after World War II ended, lumber was scarce. Being resourceful, father and son built their family home by cutting the pine trees on their property to dry and then cut into construction lumber.  The quality of the lumber did not go unnoticed by local builders who were soon asking for a supply.  The first location of the family business was actually in the Diecidue’s front yard!  Today Dash Lumber & Supply, the business Joe and his father started, is a full-service lumber and building supply store serving the Metropolitan New Orleans area.
World War II…

Joe Diecidue with Merchant Marines at the WWII Museum in New Orleans
Joe Diecidue was born and raised in New Orleans.  After high school he went to Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY.  He served as a Merchant Marine during World War II. The U.S. Merchant Marines’ job is putting our armies and equipment on enemy territory and maintaining them there.  President Franklin D. Roosevelt and many military leaders praised the role of the U.S. Merchant Marine during WWII as the "Fourth Arm of Defense."
Earlier this year Joe was invited to attend the opening of the ‘Road to Toyko’ Exhibit at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Part of the event was to honor and acknowledge the often overlooked service of the U.S. Merchant Marines.  Afterwards, Merchant Marine cadets had the honor to speak with Joe about his Merchant Marine experience.
Family Affair…

“We Deliver the Goods” was the motto of the U.S. Merchant Marines during the war effort.  After the war, Joe kept delivering the goods.  He served in the US Navy Reserves for 20 years while creating and expanding Dash Lumber with his Dad and then with sons, Gary and Michael.  Through the years more than 25 cousins and extended family have worked at Dash.  Joe is still at the heart of the business. He comes to work every day and serves as Chairman of the Board of Dash Lumber.

LMC Annual Meeting…
As an LMC Board Member, Joe’s son Michael Diecidue has been an active voice at LMC since Dash Lumber joined in 2001.  He is excited that this year’s LMC Annual Meeting will be in his hometown of New Orleans and encourages all LMC Dealers to come down and experience all that NOLA has to offer.  Culture- Music- Food- History- Entertainment!   Listen to what Mike has to say in this video:

The National World War II Museum is a short 7-minute walk from the

125 Year Milestone for H.L. Munn Lumber Company

LMC Regional Manager Warren Schuckies (L) with H.L. Munn General Manager Jon Zeigler (C) and Company President Erik Munn (R)In 1891 Hiram Lester Munn, a Civil War veteran, left his home state of New York to open a business in the center of Iowa supplying lumber and building materials to the town of Ames, 30 miles north of Des Moines. That was 125 years ago.

To be in business for 125 years is a major accomplishment, and to have done it all under continuous family ownership is even greater. According to the Family Firm Institute, only 13% of family-owned businesses fall to the third generation.  H.L. Munn has been operated by the family through five generations.  A truly remarkable achievement.

There have been many changes throughout H.L. Munn’s 125-year history including a move from a 1.4-acre downtown location to a 10-acre site providing one-stop shopping for contractor and commercial customers.  Along with a design showroom, H.L. Munn offers quality lumber and building materials along with services that include material estimating, delivery and installed sales.

H.L. Munn became a member of LMC in 2004, actively participating in committee work and attending LMC events to network with fellow dealers.

LMC Regional Manager Warren Schuckies (L) recently visited General Manager Jon Zeigler (C) and Company President Erik Munn (R) to present them with a plaque from LMC honoring their 125th anniversary.

LMC Proudly Congratulates
H.L. Munn Lumber Company
on 125 Years in Business!

Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity honors Jackson Lumber & Millwork and the Torrisi Family

Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity founder Margot Bixby with Jackson Lumber & Millwork's Mark Torrisi, Jay Torrisi, and Al Torrisi. Photo by Emily O'Brien PhotographyAs part of Merrimack Valley Habitat’s 30th anniversary celebration on Saturday, May 21st, Jackson Lumber & Millwork and the Torrisi family were honored for supporting their mission over the years. The celebration was held at the Jackson warehouse in Lawrence, Massachusetts and included craft cocktails, a live and silent auction, a locally sourced tasting menu, and entertainment.

Over Jackson Lumber & Millwork’s 70 years as a successful family owned and operated business, the Torrisi family has given back to the community and industry with time, leadership, and contributions. They have been proud to support Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity since its inception in 1985. In that time, Habitat has helped 92 families achieve a piece of the American dream – home ownership.

As Jackson Lumber & Millwork president, Mark Torrisi, commented, “Supporting our local Habitat for Humanity in their goal to create affordable housing within our community, one home at a time, is a great fit for us at Jackson. With our headquarters in Lawrence for our entire 70 years, we have always been committed to the community and committed to its revitalization.”

The work Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity has accomplished with Jackson has touched almost every neighborhood in the City of Lawrence from rebuilding after the Market Street fire to the latest project which is a redesign of the old St. Patrick’s convent on Parker Street into 10 condominium units. Dick Sumberg, of The Financial Advisors and Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity Board President regards Jackson’s long standing commitment as nothing short of heroic over these past 30 years. “When the inventory is needed we simply pick-up the phone. As our key supplier, there is a little bit of Jackson Lumber and the Torrisi family in every home we have built over the past 30 years. We are so fortunate to have such a gracious relationship and look forward to its continuation for the next 30 years.”

Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity is an independent local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the largest non-profit home builder in the world. Working in partnership with families in need, volunteers and donors, they build simple, affordable homes that are then sold to the families at cost with a no-interest mortgage. This partnership makes it possible for families who could not otherwise afford a home realize the dream of home ownership.

L to R: LMC President John Somerville, NLBMDA Chair Scott Yates of Denver Lumber, John Perna of Hamilton Building Supply who serves on LMC's Aspiring Leaders Committee, with JD Saunders of Economy Lumber and former NLBMDA Chair.LMC Dealers turned out in force to support NLBMDA’s Annual Legislative Conference April 18 -20th  in Washington, DC.   Representing the majority of conference attendees, LMC Dealers joined with independent lumberyards from across the nation to share with legislators their personal stories on how current regulations and economic policies affect small business.   Dealers lobbied on issues that ranged from restoring mandatory sanctions for frivolous lawsuits,  to changing the definition of full-time employees under the Affordable Care Act,  to protecting lumber dealers from product liability lawsuits.   LMC Dealers are deeply involved in their national association.  This year’s NLBMDA Chair is Scott Yates of Denver Lumber.  Former NLBMDA Chairs, also in attendance, included JD Saunders of Economy Lumber, Chris Yenrick of Smith Phillips Building Supply and Cally Fromme of Zarsky Lumber.   In addition, Bob Sanford of Sanford & Hawley and Rick Lierz of Franklin Building Supply were appointed to NLMBDA's Board of Directors.

Part of the event included a dealer panel discussion with NLBMDA’s Manufacturers and Services Council.  Two LMC Dealers, John Perna of Hamilton Building Supply and Bill Burress of H.O. Seiffert Lumber joined with independent lumber dealer, Charley Miller of the Miller Lumber Company for the session.  The dealer panel spoke to the challenges facing the industry; none more significant than the difficult labor force with fewer younger people entering the industry.  This brought up opportunities suppliers have to align with dealers by developing closer partnerships that work to provide added value services and education to contractors.
LMC’s President John Somerville, who also serves on NLBMDA’s Manufacturers and Services Council, stated: “LMC is proud to support NLBMDA.  Our dealers are strong advocates and their attendance to speak to policymakers on the critical issues facing our industry is extremely important and necessary. “   John Perna of Hamilton Building Supply, agrees LMC Dealers need to support and participate in NLBMDA Legislative Conference saying, “If we’re not here making an argument for our industry we’re going to be left behind”.
Following the event, NLBMDA Chair Scott Yates reached out to fellow LMC Dealers by video describing the air of openness on Capitol Hill this year while encouraging more participation from LMC Dealers for future events.

A message from Scott Yates, LMC Dealer and NLMBDA Chair for 2016

LMC started with just thirty five independent lumber dealers in 1935; Building Business Together. Take a look through the slide show below. This photo gallery of LMC’s independent dealers is a testament to a long proud heritage. From horse drawn lumber deliveries to a full fleet of trucks, the LMC Dealers that banned together over eighty years ago is today over 1,300 locations strong.
The sideshow depicts dealer yards throughout the years, fleets of trucks, and the people who worked there: some past, some present day. There are store fronts surrounded by cars and delivery vehicles that could now be considered ‘classics’.

These many images of people, frozen in time, are those whose dedicated work serves to remind us that their legacy continues today with entrepreneurial pride and the collective power of LMC, building business together.
