Buzz Bodes Well at the LMC EXPO


 
                   

This year’s LMC Forest Products and Building Materials EXPO in Philadelphia was abuzz with anticipation for what’s next in the housing market.

For LMC stockholders and buyers, the annual event is a crucial opportunity to connect with other industry professionals. “The LMC EXPO is informative,” said Michael Coppage, of Kelly Brothers Home Center. “You network with fellow dealers and you speak to people who actually produce the materials. For us, it’s necessary information on how to handle our upcoming material needs.” This sentiment was echoed by increased turnout, with a ten percent boost in both supplier table top exhibits and dealer attendance.

One topic dominating conversations up and down the supply chain: the challenges posed to our industry by shortages in skilled labor. Unlike past issues relating to supply allocations or lending, the need for skilled labor is one that can be addressed by internal solutions, including the implementation of training and technology focused programs. 

Featured speaker Clark Ellis, of the Continuum Advisory Group, dissected the topic from a builder perspective at a packed breakfast presentation. Ellis offered targeted strategies LMC dealers can use to provide necessary educational opportunities that set builders up for success.

LMC Senior Vice President Andy Toombs said, Positioning themselves for the upcoming year in this collaborative environment gives our dealers the competitive edge.” 

The LMC EXPO remains a forum for sharing valuable insights and strengthening the relationships that foster forward-thinking, mutually-beneficial innovation.

The Detering Company Celebrates 90 Years

 
In the 1890's Carl Detering Jr.’s grandfather Herman ran the ‘Last Chance Grocery’ located at the end of a trolley line on Washington Avenue in Houston, TX.   On the same spot in 1926 Carl Sr. opened a building materials operation.  In its earliest days, The Detering Company was a brick company that very literally helped to build the city.  After World War II, The Detering Company was selling all kinds of essential construction supplies to builders, contributing heavily to one of Houston’s greatest construction eras.

In 1986, Carl Sr. passed the baton to his son, Carl Detering, Jr., who took over the role of president of the company.

The company has seen remarkable growth.  In 2011 they joined LMC.  In 2012 they realized that a new facility was needed to reach future goals.  The new facility was a big jump in size and bigger jump in efficiency.  So much so that in 2015 they received the ProSales Excellence Award in Facility Design.


Joe Burlison, LMC Regional Manager for the South Central Region (L in photo), recently stopped in to visit and presented General Manager, Alicia Dedman and Carl Detering, Jr (R in photo) with a plaque from LMC recognizing their milestone 90th Anniversary.

LMC Develops Leadership Training That Absolutely Crushes It

 
       

Wayne, PA ‐ LMC raised the bar on training for the up and coming generation at their latest Leadership Summit held in Baltimore on October 11-14.  Going outside the industry, LMC took attendees to where leadership skills are notably developed for excellence – the United States Naval Academy.  This was nothing like the classroom conferences that attendees are so often accustomed to. The LMC Leadership Summit kept attendees on the move in settings they won’t soon forget. Following the instructive words of the senior midshipmen in Memorial Hall at the US Naval Academy, attendees were also in the Baltimore Ravens Locker Room for a presentation on team building. LBM industry leader Huber spoke on how to effectively manage and lead strategic and organizational change.  A high energy session covering “Onboarding Teammates” came from the entrepreneurial and highly successful company Under Armour.  
 
“What really differentiated this event from others is that we had the opportunity to meet and learn from leaders in other industries.” - Tim Huff, Building Center of Gloucester, MA and Chairman of LMC Aspiring Leaders Committee.
 
The theme of the summit ‘Leadership & Team Building’ also brought attendees to embark on a very physical and hands-on training for how to row on the Patapsco River. Rowing in sync is a must to be successful as a team in this sport. The group spent just as much time in team building exercises on land as they did with oars in hand on the river.  The analogy of rowing to illustrate the importance of teamwork was very insightful.  Out on the water the group was rewarded for their efforts with a surprise flyover by the Blue Angels!

Strengthening leadership skills and relationships within the LMC network is key to this event.  It enables emerging leaders to share with other young leaders from across the country and seek out peers to build their own circle of influence within the LMC community.  LMC plans to continue these types of innovative events that echo the company’s philosophy of building business together.

Leah Fennell of Shepley Wood Products Elected President of the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealer


LMC congratulates Leah Fennell on her new role as President of the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Dealers.  Leah is a strong supporter of industry related groups.  She recently served as moderator for a Social Media session at the Annual LMC Dealer Exchange held in Nashville.  Along with her involvement in LMC and MRLD she is an active member of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod. 
 
Leah joined Shepley Wood Products in 2006, as their Marketing Director.  With an emphasis on relationship marketing, Leah works with the sales teams and suppliers to provide educational and social opportunities for building professionals. Utilizing social media outlets along with conventional advertising efforts, Shepley is a recognized leader in their community and the LBM industry.
 
Leah lives in Eastham, Massachusetts with her husband Skip.

HBSDealer, the building products and home improvement retailing magazine recently announced that their HBS Pro Dealer of the Year is T. H. Rogers, a member of LMC since 2014.  The annual award by HBSDealer recognizes an industry stand out each year for their high-performance standards along with a commitment to best practices and the best values of the lumber and building material industry.

Daryl Lundberg Elected Chairman of the Northwestern Lumber Association Board of Directors

 

Daryl Lundberg, LMC Stockholder and President of Northwoods Lumber Company was recently elected Chairman of the Northwestern Lumber Association Board of Directors.  Northwoods Lumber ia a second generation family owned building material dealer serving the Blackduck and Bemidji areas of Minnesota. They joined LMC in October of 2015.  

Daryl has 30 years of experience in the industry.  Previously he served as a Director and Vice Chairman of the NLA Board of Directors and on the Advisory Council for Orgill.  He is also active in his community serving as mayor of Blackduck, on the city council, on the Blackduck Area Development Corporation and the Blackduck Chamber of Commerce. When he is not busy with these activities, he enjoys sports of all kinds and pheasant hunting with his German Shorthair Pointer dogs. Daryl and his wife Lori reside in Blackduck with their children, Jessica, Maxwell and Mason.

The Northwestern Lumber Association is a trade organization headquartered in Golden Valley, Minnesota, which represents 800 independent lumber and building material retailers and their suppliers in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. The association represents the lumber and building material industry in the legislature at both the state and federal level. The Northwestern Lumber Association has been serving the lumber and building material industry since 1890.

COLLABORATION IS KEY FOR SUCCESS AT THE 2016 LMC DEALER EXCHANGE


                    



When it comes to business challenges, LMC Dealers look forward to sharing their personal insights and real world solutions. That’s what dealers did during the annual LMC Dealer Exchange which was held September 26th through the 28th in Nashville, TN.

Even though the roundtables are a great forum for discussion, enough can’t be said about the one on one conversations going on during the breaks, meals, and local travel time. That’s when the real networking and new relationships are being forged. The relaxed atmosphere with some of the best minds in the industry provides the most thought provoking ideas for success.

“The LMC Dealer Exchange has just been exceptional for me and my son. We connected with other family members who own lumber businesses. It’s been great to exchange best practices and ideas with people who have similar challenges ‐ it’s been a remarkable experience.” ‐ Lanny Moore, Suncoast Contractor Supply

Facilitators spearheaded conversation on topics that covered onboarding and recruiting employees, social media, installed sales opportunities, and a lightening round of best practices. Masonite and ModernView Decking sponsored the event, presenting the benefits their products offer the professional customers.

Looking outside the industry, this year’s event included a tour of the Nissan Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, TN that produces over 640,000 vehicles annually. This tour was packed with massive robotic machinery, and layers of conveyors filling over 884 acres under one roof. The tour also offered key insights into supply chain, operational and logistical best practices.

LMC Dealers walked away with new connections and ideas to take back home. The LMC Dealer Exchange is an event where the sharing doesn’t end when the meeting is over.


That’s the kind of collaboration that is the
strength of the LMC network.

Margaret Price, CEO of Ridgefield Supply Company in Ridgefield, Conn.Margaret Price, owner of Ridgefield Lumber is serving on the "Women with Impact" panel at the upcoming WBDC's 15th Annual Business Breakfast & Symposium in CT.  She was recently featured in CT Post about her participation and her efforts to encourage others to get involved.

“Don’t be afraid to get involved with business organizations. You think you know it all but then you step outside and you realize there are so many people out there who can help you,” said Price, owner of Ridgefield Supply Co. “Every business is different, whether you’re an HR firm, a restaurant owner, a bakery owner or you sell children’s clothes, but we all face a lot of the same issues. It’s very easy to get stuck on an island and feel you can’t reach out to anybody. We all start off with right intentions. But it’s really, truly making the time to do it and committing to it.”

“The lumber and building material industry has a phenomenal foundation. We are part of a $3 billion buying group that allows us to be competitive with the big box stores,” Price said. “That goes hand-in-hand with the WBDC because being part of an organization, whether it’s a buying group or an organization like the WBDC, you have power in numbers and power in networking. For us, being part of the various groups we belong to is very important.”

Hancock Named “Best Places to Work” in Maine, 3 Years in a Row!

                                                

The 2016 Best Places to Work in Maine list recognizes companies that establish and foster outstanding workplace environments. RIDGEFIELD — Congressman Jim Himes got a sneak peak at what will be the new Ridgefield Supply Co. during a visit to the lumberyard on Friday afternoon.

Himes, D-4, met with personnel from the company to tour construction of the new site and to discuss the Lumber Dealers Association of Connecticut and legislation that impacts the lumber industry.

“It’s a great small business and growing. They just added three more hires,” the four-term Democrat said. “The Lumber Dealers Association of Connecticut is a good organization for highlighting issues that are important for them.”

Ridgefield Supply Co., which employs about 50 people, is currently building a new site adjacent to the existing one. Its current home will be leveled and another building will go there, as well as additional parking.


“Logistically it’s a big improvement for us,” Craig Sinclair, of Ridgefield Supply Co., said. “What’s interesting about this investment is that it’s happening a lot in this industry. It’s costing a lot but that’s all part of the process.”

Dealer Spotlight: Dash Lumber, New Orleans, LA

                     Gary, Joe, and Michael Diecidue

The Beginning….

The story of Dash Lumber starts with Joe Diecidue (Dásh-ê-dü) and his Dad Sam.  In 1946, the year after World War II ended, lumber was scarce. Being resourceful, father and son built their family home by cutting the pine trees on their property to dry and then cut into construction lumber.  The quality of the lumber did not go unnoticed by local builders who were soon asking for a supply.  The first location of the family business was actually in the Diecidue’s front yard!  Today Dash Lumber & Supply, the business Joe and his father started, is a full-service lumber and building supply store serving the Metropolitan New Orleans area. 
 
World War II…

Joe Diecidue was born and raised in New Orleans.  After high school he went to Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY.  He served as a Merchant Marine during World War II. The U.S. Merchant Marines’ job is putting our armies and equipment on enemy territory and maintaining them there.  President Franklin D. Roosevelt and many military leaders praised the role of the U.S. Merchant Marine during WWII as the "Fourth Arm of Defense." 
 
Earlier this year Joe was invited to attend the opening of the ‘Road to Toyko’ Exhibit at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Part of the event was to honor and acknowledge the often overlooked service of the U.S. Merchant Marines.  Afterwards, Merchant Marine cadets had the honor to speak with Joe about his Merchant Marine experience.
 
Family Affair…

“We Deliver the Goods” was the motto of the U.S. Merchant Marines during the war effort.  After the war, Joe kept delivering the goods.  He served in the US Navy Reserves for 20 years while creating and expanding Dash Lumber with his Dad and then with sons, Gary and Michael.  Through the years more than 25 cousins and extended family have worked at Dash.  Joe is still at the heart of the business. He comes to work every day and serves as Chairman of the Board of Dash Lumber.

As an LMC Board Member, Joe’s son Michael Diecidue has been an active voice at LMC since Dash Lumber joined in 2001.  He is excited that this year’s LMC Annual Meeting will be in his hometown of New Orleans and encourages all LMC Dealers to come down and experience all that NOLA has to offer.  Culture- Music- Food- History- Entertainment!   Listen to what Mike has to say in this video:

125 Year Milestone for H.L. Munn Lumber Company

LMC Regional Manager Warren Schuckies (L) with H.L. Munn General Manager Jon Zeigler (C) and Company President Erik Munn (R)In 1891 Hiram Lester Munn, a Civil War veteran, left his home state of New York to open a business in the center of Iowa supplying lumber and building materials to the town of Ames, 30 miles north of Des Moines. That was 125 years ago.  

To be in business for 125 years is a major accomplishment, and to have done it all under continuous family ownership is even greater. According to the Family Firm Institute, only 13% of family-owned businesses fall to the third generation.  H.L. Munn has been operated by the family through five generations.  A truly remarkable achievement. 

There have been many changes throughout H.L. Munn’s 125-year history including a move from a 1.4-acre downtown location to a 10-acre site providing one-stop shopping for contractor and commercial customers.  Along with a design showroom, H.L. Munn offers quality lumber and building materials along with services that include material estimating, delivery and installed sales.

H.L. Munn became a member of LMC in 2004, actively participating in committee work and attending LMC events to network with fellow dealers.

LMC Annual Golf Outing 2016 at Linfield National Golf Club


Over 100 golfers arrived at the Linfield National Golf Club in Limerick, PA on July 23rd to tee off for the 35th Annual LMC Golf Outing.  This group of LMC dealers, suppliers, and staff, both current and retired, had a terrific day on the links enjoying the game with a lot of jokes and a lot of laughs.  One major plus this year was the LMC cooling towel every golfer received upon registering. These were very much appreciated with the temperatures staying above ninety degrees all day!


Thanks to everyone who attended and made this year's golf outing a success!

Kevin Hancock Receives Edmund Muskie “Access to Justice” Award

 
Kevin Hancock, President of Hancock Lumber in Maine was recently awarded the Edmund Muskie "Access to Justice" Award.  The Hon. Edmund S. Muskie Access to Justice Award honors commitment to the public good, advanced through hard thinking, deep feeling, a voice of eloquent civility and a passion for justice. The award is presented each spring at the Muskie Dinner.
 
Hancock was recognized for his many leadership achievements in the community.  In the lumber and building material industry, Hancock has had a role in the NRLA and he was the youngest chairman ever at NLBMDA.

Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity honors Jackson Lumber & Millwork and the Torrisi Family

The celebration was held at the Jackson warehouse in Lawrence, Massachusetts and included craft cocktails, a live and silent auction, a locally sourced tasting menu, and entertainment.

Over Jackson Lumber & Millwork’s 70 years as a successful family owned and operated business, the Torrisi family has given back to the community and industry with time, leadership, and contributions. They have been proud to support Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity since its inception in 1985. In that time, Habitat has helped 92 families achieve a piece of the American dream – home ownership.

LMC DEALERS STRONG ADVOCATES AT NLBMDA LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE



L to R: LMC President John Somerville, NLBMDA Chair Scott Yates of Denver Lumber, John Perna of Hamilton Building Supply who serves on LMC's Aspiring Leaders Committee, with JD Saunders of Economy Lumber and former NLBMDA Chair.LMC Dealers turned out in force to support NLBMDA’s Annual Legislative Conference April 18 -20th  in Washington, DC.   Representing the majority of conference attendees, LMC Dealers joined with independent lumberyards from across the nation to share with legislators their personal stories on how current regulations and economic policies affect small business.   Dealers lobbied on issues that ranged from restoring mandatory sanctions for frivolous lawsuits,  to changing the definition of full-time employees under the Affordable Care Act,  to protecting lumber dealers from product liability lawsuits.   LMC Dealers are deeply involved in their national association.  This year’s NLBMDA Chair is Scott Yates of Denver Lumber.  Former NLBMDA Chairs, also in attendance, included JD Saunders of Economy Lumber, Chris Yenrick of Smith Phillips Building Supply and Cally Fromme of Zarsky Lumber.   In addition, Bob Sanford of Sanford & Hawley and Rick Lierz of Franklin Building Supply were appointed to NLMBDA's Board of Directors.  

Part of the event included a dealer panel discussion with NLBMDA’s Manufacturers and Services Council.  Two LMC Dealers, John Perna of Hamilton Building Supply and Bill Burress of H.O. Seiffert Lumber joined with independent lumber dealer, Charley Miller of the Miller Lumber Company for the session.  The dealer panel spoke to the challenges facing the industry; none more significant than the difficult labor force with fewer younger people entering the industry.  This brought up opportunities suppliers have to align with dealers by developing closer partnerships that work to provide added value services and education to contractors. 
 
LMC’s President John Somerville, who also serves on NLBMDA’s Manufacturers and Services Council, stated: “LMC is proud to support NLBMDA.  Our dealers are strong advocates and their attendance to speak to policymakers on the critical issues facing our industry is extremely important and necessary. “   John Perna of Hamilton Building Supply, agrees LMC Dealers need to support and participate in NLBMDA Legislative Conference saying, “If we’re not here making an argument for our industry we’re going to be left behind”.
 
Following the event, NLBMDA Chair Scott Yates reached out to fellow LMC Dealers by video describing the air of openness on Capitol Hill this year while encouraging more participation from LMC Dealers for future events.

LMC started with just thirty five independent lumber dealers in 1935; Building Business Together. Take a look through the slide show below. This photo gallery of LMC’s independent dealers is a testament to a long proud heritage. From horse drawn lumber deliveries to a full fleet of trucks, the LMC Dealers that banned together over eighty years ago is today over 1,300 locations strong.
 
The sideshow depicts dealer yards throughout the years, fleets of trucks, and the people who worked there: some past, some present day. There are store fronts surrounded by cars and delivery vehicles that could now be considered ‘classics’.
 

These many images of people, frozen in time, are those whose dedicated work serves to remind us that their legacy continues today with entrepreneurial pride and the collective power of LMC, building business together.

2016 ProSales Dealer of the Year - LMC's Franklin Building Supply

 
 
LMC Congratulates Franklin Building Supply, based in Boise, Idaho, on being selected as ProSales' Dealer of the Year for 2016. 
 
The award honors outstanding achievements in construction supply operations, management and innovations, as well as meritorious service to the dealer’s community and to the lumber and building material industry. ProSales selects only one construction supply dealer per year from more than 7,500 firms nationwide.
 
“Franklin arguably does more things well over a more diverse territory than just about any other building material supplier in the country,” ProSales editor-in-chief Craig Webb wrote in his cover story on the company in the magazine's January/February 2016 issue.
 
Franklin has been an LMC Dealer since 2009.  Franklin Building Supply president and CEO Rick Lierz currently serves on LMC's Building Materials Committee.
